In the early hours of New Year's Day in 2018, a life was tragically cut short in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Trenity Grimes, a 29-year-old male, was found suffering from gunshot wounds in the 2600 block of Balis Drive at approximately 1:45 a.m. Despite the efforts of those at the scene, Grimes succumbed to his injuries and died.
The Baton Rouge Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the city's first homicide of the new year.
Detectives working the case came to believe that the fatal shooting stemmed from some sort of altercation. Initially, authorities had no known suspects and appealed to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest.
Thanks to assistance from the community, a breakthrough in the case came not long after the incident. Investigators were able to identify a suspect, and on January 23, 2018, an arrest was made. Thornton Lovely, 27 years old at the time, was taken into custody at his home. He was subsequently booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Trenity Grimes.
