In the early morning hours of February 18, 2018, a dispute on North Broad Street in New Orleans escalated into a fatal encounter for Troy Wilson Jr., a 21-year-old African American male. The incident, which occurred around 2:10 a.m. in the 700 block of the street, reportedly began as a large brawl that culminated in gunfire. Responding officers discovered Wilson with a gunshot wound to his upper body.
Despite the immediate aid of paramedics at the scene, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to them.
The subsequent investigation by the New Orleans Police Department swiftly led to the identification of a suspect. An arrest warrant was issued for 22-year-old Carlsel Alexander in connection with the shooting. At the time of the incident, Alexander was on probation for a second-degree battery conviction in a different parish.
Following his arrest, the case against Carlsel Alexander moved through the justice system. An Orleans Parish grand jury handed down a three-count indictment, formally charging him with the second-degree murder of Troy Wilson Jr. The indictment also included charges of obstruction of justice in a homicide investigation and being a felon in possession of a firearm. In light of the indictment, a judge increased Alexander's bond to $475,000.
