Larry Darden, 42, a Black man from Detroit, Michigan, was killed in the early hours of August 15, 2017, after gunfire erupted at the intersection of Hubbell Avenue and West Outer Drive on the city’s west side. Just after 3 a.m., he was riding in a silver Chrysler Sebring with a woman when another vehicle pulled alongside them and someone inside opened fire.
Investigators said roughly 10 shots tore into the Chrysler, and the car kept rolling south on Hubbell until it veered off course and struck a tree. The woman behind the wheel was hit in the head and rushed to Sinai-Grace Hospital, initially described in early reports as 36 years old, though a later account described her as 28 and said she survived.
Police described the attack as a drive-by-style shooting and quickly focused on what they believed was the fleeing vehicle: a burgundy Mazda seen speeding away from the scene. Beyond that, the people inside the other car were shadows—no clear faces, no names released, no immediate arrests announced. In the later reporting, investigators said the circumstances suggested the victims were targeted and possibly followed before the shots were fired, a chilling detail that made the randomness of the violence feel less like chance and more like intent. As months passed, the case hardened into silence. In March 2018, Darden’s mother spoke publicly about the strain of not knowing who did it or why, describing a fear that lingered because the shooter—or shooters—had never been identified. She pleaded for witnesses to come forward, frustrated that so many people could mourn her son yet so few would speak to investigators.
