Johnny Thomas, 29, a Black male from Shreveport, Louisiana, was shot on the afternoon of September 24, 2018, in the city’s Agurs neighborhood. Police were called to a residence in the 1700 block of Pointe Coupee Drive just before 2:30 p.m., where Thomas had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and the shooter had already fled. Rushed to University Health Hospital, he fought for life only briefly before he succumbed to his injuries.

Violent Crimes unit began piecing together what happened inside the home, the day’s tension came into view. Investigators believed the fatal gunfire was tied to a dispute that had erupted earlier at the same address—an argument that spilled over into a fight and prompted officers to arrest two men for disturbing the peace. By the time Thomas lay wounded, the confrontation had escalated from words and fists into something irreversible.
During the initial round of interviews and information gathering at the scene, police identified Trimnell D. O’Neal, 26, as the alleged gunman. A warrant was obtained charging O’Neal with second-degree murder, and bond was set at $500,000, as investigators moved swiftly to locate him.
The next day, September 25, 2018, the search ended without a chase: O’Neal surrendered at the Shreveport Police Complex. After being interviewed by investigators, he was booked into the Shreveport City Jail on the outstanding warrant, marking the case’s first major arrest and placing the death of Johnny Thomas on a path toward prosecution.
