On the evening of November 18, 2018, in Garyville, Louisiana, 34-year-old Lorenzo Eugene, an African American male, was shot and killed in what authorities described as an ambush-style attack. The incident occurred just before 8 p.m. near his residence on South Fig Street. According to the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office, it is believed that someone was waiting for Eugene to emerge from his home before opening fire.
Community members reported hearing a volley of gunshots,
with estimates ranging from seven to thirteen rounds fired. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they found Eugene suffering from numerous gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the location. Investigators discovered a handgun in Eugene's possession, though the motive for the shooting was not immediately clear.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Lorenzo Eugene's family, including his mother, Sharon Eugene, made public pleas for anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation. At the time of his death, Eugene was a father to three children. Despite the ongoing investigation by the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office and the cooperation of some community members who provided tips, no arrests have been made in connection with his murder. The case remains an active and open investigation, with authorities continuing to seek leads to identify and apprehend the person or persons responsible for his death.
