On Christmas Day in 2018, Leon Bush, a 48-year-old male, was fatally shot in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans. The incident occurred around 5:19 p.m. at the intersection of General Meyer Avenue and Casimier Street. Bush, who was visiting New Orleans for the holidays from Violet, Louisiana, was a husband, a father to three daughters, and a grandfather.
According to police reports, when officers arrived at the scene, they found two victims.
Leon Bush was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, an adult female, had sustained a gunshot wound to her leg and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. A cousin of Bush who was present during the attack recalled a sudden hail of bullets.
The New Orleans Police Department's Homicide Unit led the investigation into the shooting. Through their inquiries, detectives identified Damyia McInnis as the primary suspect in the case. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued for McInnis on charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.
On January 18, 2019, members of the NOPD's Violent Offender Warrant Squad located and arrested Damyia McInnis at a residence in the Third District. Following his arrest, McInnis was transported to the Orleans Parish Justice Center.
