On a Saturday evening in Chalmette, Louisiana, the life of a man well-known in the French Quarter was brought to a violent end. Larry Hill, a 56-year-old male, was inside his residence on Shangri-La Drive on May 4, 2019, when the tranquility of the evening was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Responding to a report of shots fired at approximately 8:30 p.m., deputies from the St.
Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office arrived to find bullet holes piercing a window of the home.
Upon making entry, law enforcement discovered Hill lying on the ground, having sustained fatal bullet wounds. A native of New Jersey, he had made a life for himself in Louisiana and was a beloved and long-standing employee of the Tropical Isle bar on Bourbon Street, where he had worked for 30 years. His employers and friends in the French Quarter remembered him as a jovial and helpful gentleman.
The investigation into the homicide led to the swift arrest of a suspect. Matthew Squyres, a 35-year-old man from New Orleans, was taken into custody and booked on a count of second-degree murder. Sheriff James Pohlmann indicated that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Investigators learned that Hill and Squyres were acquaintances and that the deadly encounter stemmed from a prior dispute between the two men. Squyres was booked into the St. Bernard Parish jail to await further legal proceedings.
