On a tragic day in June of 2019, Manuel Caronia, a 45-year-old male, was senselessly killed in what authorities described as a random act of violence in Metairie, Louisiana. Caronia was with his friend, 57-year-old Nicky Robeau, on the afternoon of June 18th. The two men were simply running an errand to an O'Reilly Auto Parts store to pick up a part for Robeau's daughter's car when their lives were cut short.
While sitting in their vehicle, they were fatally shot.
The unprovoked attack that claimed the lives of Caronia and Robeau was part of a larger, violent spree that terrorized the New Orleans metropolitan area. In the days leading up to their deaths, the same suspect was linked to several other shootings. On June 17th, 22-year-old Isai Cadalzo was shot and killed on his way home from work in Metairie. The alleged gunman was also connected to the murder of Bruce Reed in New Orleans East on June 6th, as well as multiple other non-fatal shootings at moving vehicles in Kenner and Metairie.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office quickly launched an investigation that led to the swift arrest of a suspect. Twenty-two-year-old Sean Barrette was taken into custody and accused of carrying out the random killing spree. The arrest brought a sense of closure to the families of the victims, who were grappling with the sudden and inexplicable loss of their loved ones. Barrette faced multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder and aggravated criminal damage, in addition to the murder accusations.
Manuel Caronia was remembered as a loving father to his daughters, Nyeisha, Kayla, Louisa, and Shakia, and his sons, Manuel II, Matthew, and Josh. He was a mechanic by trade who would service cars from his Cadillac wherever they had broken down. Those who knew him described him as a compassionate and funny man who would give you his last twenty dollars. His untimely death left a void in the lives of his family and friends, who mourned the loss of a man taken too soon.
