In the summer of 2019, a young man's life was tragically cut short in Monroe, Louisiana. Joseph Conrad Morris, a 22-year-old Caucasian male, was fatally shot in the head on July 10, 2019. Known for his love of sports and animals, with aspirations of becoming a herpetologist, Morris’s death came at the hands of a longtime friend.
On the night of the incident, Joseph was in the company of his friend, Samuel Caleb Parker, who was also 22, and two women.
After a night of drinking, the group ended up at a convenience store in Monroe. In the parking lot, an intoxicated and agitated Parker, who had a history of substance abuse, used a Taurus 9 mm handgun to shoot Morris while he was seated in the driver's seat of Parker's truck.
Following the shooting, Samuel Caleb Parker was arrested and initially charged with second-degree murder. In a turn of events, Parker later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. For his role in the death of his friend, he was sentenced to serve 36 years at hard labor.
