In the early morning hours of April 7, 2020, the body of a young man, Joshua Mayberry, was discovered on the side of the road in the 4200 block of East St. Bernard Highway in Meraux, Louisiana. The 24-year-old male had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities.
Investigators from the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office quickly launched a homicide investigation.
Through their efforts, which included the review of video surveillance from the area, they were able to identify a suspect in the shooting. The investigation led them to 34-year-old Brandon Encalade of Chalmette. It was determined that Mayberry and Encalade were acquaintances, and their deadly encounter stemmed from a dispute over a woman.
Following the identification of Encalade as the primary suspect, he was located and taken into custody by the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office. He was subsequently booked on the charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Joshua Mayberry. Authorities characterized the shooting as an isolated incident.
