In the early evening of January 4, 2021, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a vehicle carrying 26-year-old Aurtrell Bivens and a juvenile was traveling northbound in the 1400 block of North 23rd Street. Suddenly, without a clear motive, one or more individuals opened fire on their vehicle. Both occupants were struck by the gunfire. The juvenile passenger sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.
Bivens, however, was critically wounded and rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
For over two weeks, Aurtrell Bivens fought for his life. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries on January 19, 2021. The Baton Rouge Police Department's investigation into the shooting, which was now a homicide, continued as they sought to identify those responsible for the violent attack. At the time, the motive behind the shooting remained unknown to investigators.
The investigation led to the identification of multiple suspects. On March 11, 2021, authorities arrested 20-year-old Isreal Jones and 18-year-old Dillan Moore in connection with the fatal shooting. A few days later, on March 15, a third suspect, 22-year-old Caleb Jackson, was also taken into custody with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Task Force.
All three men faced serious charges for their alleged involvement in the death of Aurtrell Bivens. Jones, Moore, and Jackson were each booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. Additionally, they were all charged with illegal use of a weapon, and Jones faced a further charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The investigation was noted as ongoing even after these arrests were made.
