In the late hours of a Thursday night in Lake Charles, Louisiana, a dispute between acquaintances escalated into a fatal encounter. On March 11, 2021, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to a residence on Dobbertine Road following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival around 10:30 p.m., they found 40-year-old Derek J. Ogea suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his arm and chest.
He was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Derek Ogea succumbed to his injuries and passed away the following day, Friday, March 12, 2021, at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. Born on April 30, 1980, in Lake Charles, he was a self-employed construction worker. He was a father to four children.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a person of interest. Detectives from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office learned that an acquaintance of Ogea, Jeremy E. Mulkey, 29, also of Lake Charles, was allegedly responsible for the shooting. Investigators located Mulkey and brought him in for questioning. During the interview, Mulkey confirmed to detectives that he had shot Ogea after they had a dispute.
Following his confession, Jeremy E. Mulkey was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center. He faced charges of second-degree murder, obstruction of justice, and illegal use of a dangerous weapon. At the time of his arrest, his bond was still pending.
