On the evening of April 24, 2021, a young man's life was cut short in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Carlton Phillips, a 21-year-old male, was discovered inside his vehicle on North Donmoor Avenue, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The initial investigation by the Baton Rouge Police Department pointed towards a possible drug-related motive for the tragic event that unfolded around 8:00 p.m.
that night.
For months, the case remained under active investigation as detectives worked to identify those responsible for Phillips' death. The trail eventually led them to two individuals. One of the suspects, 19-year-old Mekhi Palmer-Davis, was already incarcerated in the parish jail on other charges when authorities connected him to the shooting.
The second suspect, D'Angelo Givens, also 19, was apprehended in October 2021. According to arrest documents, Givens confessed to investigators that he had arranged to purchase marijuana from Phillips. This transaction, however, allegedly escalated into a violent encounter that ended with Phillips' murder. Following his arrest, Givens was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He faced serious charges, including first-degree murder and armed robbery, for his alleged role in the death of Carlton Phillips.
