In the late hours of a Thursday in Thibodaux, Louisiana, a tragic event unfolded that would cut short the life of a young man. Courtney Poche Jr., a 20-year-old male, was at a residence in the 500 block of Karla Drive on August 12, 2021. What might have seemed like a casual evening took a fatal turn.
That night, deputies and detectives from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office were called to the scene at 11:08 p.m. following a report of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Poche with a single gunshot wound to his head. Despite the immediate response, his injury was too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation that followed painted a grim picture of misadventure. Detectives learned that Poche had been with a 15-year-old male, and the two were playing with a pistol. Believing the firearm to be unloaded, they handled the weapon without caution. Tragically, their assumption was wrong. A single round was discharged from the gun, striking Poche in the head and ending his life in an instant.
In the aftermath of the fatal incident, the 15-year-old was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with negligent homicide for his role in the unintentional shooting. Following his arrest, the teen was placed at the Juvenile Justice Facility in Thibodaux. The local sheriff described the event as a 'horrible tragedy' and extended his condolences to Poche's family, using the incident to publicly emphasize the critical importance of firearm safety.
