In the late hours of a Friday night in New Orleans, on November 19, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the relative quiet of the 1400 block of North Claiborne Avenue. When New Orleans Police Department First District officers arrived at the scene around 11:45 p.m. following a call for an aggravated battery by shooting, they discovered an adult male inside a vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were summoned, but the man's injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene. The victim was a Black male.
The initial investigation into the man's death was a meticulous process undertaken by NOPD Homicide Unit detectives. As they pieced together the events of that fatal night, their focus began to narrow on two individuals. Through their investigative work, detectives identified Dwight Henry and Josharin Henry as perpetrators in the shooting. This led to the securing of arrest warrants for both men on charges of second-degree murder. Dwight Henry also faced an additional charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The pursuit of the suspects extended into the following year. On February 4, 2022, the first arrest was made when Josharin Henry was taken into custody and booked on one count of second-degree murder. Less than two weeks later, on February 16, a coordinated effort between the NOPD's Violent Offender Warrant Squad and the U.S. Marshals led to the apprehension of Dwight Henry in Marrero, Louisiana. He was arrested without incident and was held in the Jefferson Parish Corrections Center as a fugitive, awaiting extradition to Orleans Parish to face his charges.
