Adam C. Gaubert, a 47-year-old white man, died on October 9, 2021. He was a master trooper with the Louisiana State Police, and his death came while he was on duty, serving the public.
By the time daylight arrived that Saturday, investigators were piecing together what they described as a violent, multi-parish shooting spree that began in Livingston Parish and moved east and south through the Baton Rouge area.
Authorities said the suspect, Matthew Mire, shot two people in Livingston Parish, stole a vehicle, then entered Ascension Parish. There, Gaubert was attacked in what investigators called an ambush while he was seated in his marked patrol unit. Not long after, the same suspect was believed to have staged another shooting that killed Pamela Adair and wounded another person, and later exchanged gunfire with a pursuing trooper before disappearing into woods on foot. Gaubert was ultimately discovered more than 12 hours after he was killed, with reporting tying the delay to emergency radio protocols in place during the ongoing manhunt.
A daylong search ended with Mire’s capture, and law enforcement sought a series of warrants in multiple parishes as the scope of the case became clear. In Ascension Parish, warrants included first-degree murder of a police officer, attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, and aggravated flight from an officer; additional warrants were also obtained in East Baton Rouge Parish for aggravated flight and attempted first-degree murder of a police officer.
Years later, prosecutors in the 23rd Judicial District described the case as one that left two people dead and others critically injured, with Gaubert’s death at its center. On July 10, 2025, the district attorney’s office announced that Mire entered a plea agreement and pled guilty to multiple charges, including first-degree murder of a police officer, for the October 9, 2021 attack on Gaubert in Ascension Parish. According to the announcement, Mire confessed in open court to crimes spanning Ascension Parish, Livingston Parish, and East Baton Rouge Parish, including admitting the murders of Gaubert and Pamela Adair, and he received two consecutive life sentences along with additional time for attempted murders and other offenses. The announcement also stated that the plea terms included sweeping waivers of appeals and many forms of future relief, with prosecutors describing the result as a sentence structure intended to keep him imprisoned for the rest of his natural life.
