In the quiet town of New Iberia, Louisiana, the life of 31-year-old Dominique Lewis was tragically cut short on the night of Saturday, November 6, 2021. Lewis was discovered on the floor of his home on South Lewis Street, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The grim discovery was made by his daughter-in-law who, upon arriving at the residence, found the door slightly ajar and entered to find him.
In the days following the discovery of Lewis's body, the New Iberia Police Department
identified 31-year-old Anthony Jamal Lawson, who also went by the name Anthony Lost, as a person of interest in the case. The authorities appealed to the public for assistance in locating him. Lawson subsequently turned himself in for questioning. Although he was initially interviewed and considered a person of interest, he was transferred to the St. Mary Parish jail on unrelated charges of failure to appear in court.
Further investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of Lawson. He was charged with second-degree murder, obstruction of justice, and theft of a firearm in connection with Dominique Lewis's death. The investigation revealed that Lewis and Lawson were not strangers; they were described as close friends, a fact that added a layer of heartbreak for the victim's grieving family.
The mother of Dominique Lewis, Cindy Lewis, spoke of her overwhelming grief, a pain compounded by the fact that this was the second son she had lost to gun violence. Her younger son, Dante Lewis, had been shot and killed in 2018 at the age of 26. Both murders left a profound void in the lives of their family and friends.
