In the spring of 2022, a violent encounter in New Orleans East abruptly ended the life of 26-year-old Mel Green. On the evening of May 15th, officers from the New Orleans Police Department's Seventh District were dispatched to the 5700 block of Crowder Boulevard following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival at approximately 8:17 p.m., they discovered Green suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services transported Green to a local hospital in a desperate attempt to
save his life, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced deceased. Two days later, on May 17, the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office formally identified the victim as Mel Green. The investigation into the young man's death was swiftly undertaken by the NOPD's Homicide Unit.
Through their investigative efforts, detectives were able to identify a 17-year-old male as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting. On June 7, 2022, an arrest warrant was secured for the juvenile on a charge of second-degree murder. The NOPD's Violent Offender Warrant Squad located the suspect two days later at a residence on Gawain Drive, also in the Seventh District. The arrest was made without incident, and the teenager was subsequently booked into the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center.
