On the evening of May 21, 2009, Deanna Watkins, a 29-year-old African-American woman, was shot multiple times just outside her home at 3 Arbutus Street in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston. The shooting occurred at approximately 7:40 p.m. Despite the prompt response from emergency services, Watkins succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later officially ruled her death a homicide.
