In the heat of a Louisiana afternoon on June 23, 2022, Richard Demond Marquise Eackels Sr., a 27-year-old African American male, was at a car wash on Perkins Road in Baton Rouge, a mundane task on any other day. Accompanying him in his vehicle were two young children and another adult male. The afternoon took a tragic turn when another vehicle pulled up beside Eackels at the vacuum area of Benny's Express Car Wash.
A 19-year-old named Kamaryion Glasper was in the other vehicle, and upon
spotting Eackels, an exchange of gunfire erupted between them. The motive for the shooting is believed to have been an ongoing feud. In the chaotic shootout that followed, Eackels was fatally wounded and died at the scene. Fortunately, the two children in his car were unharmed. The other male passenger with Eackels reportedly fled the scene on foot and was sought by police for questioning.
Glasper sustained a minor injury during the gunfight and was later apprehended by Baton Rouge Police Homicide Detectives at a local hospital. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Glasper faced serious charges, including first-degree murder for the death of Richard Eackels and three counts of attempted first-degree murder. The investigation into the deadly encounter remained ongoing as authorities worked to piece together all the details of the incident that cut short a young man's life.
