In the late hours of a Monday night in August 2022, the quiet of an Abita Springs neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Responding to a neighbor's frantic call, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's deputies arrived at a residence on Tee Street to find a grim scene. Lying by the front door of the home was the body of 30-year-old Jon Paul McIntyre.
He had been shot, and a vehicle was seen fleeing the area shortly after the fatal shots were fired.
The investigation into the death of the male victim quickly pointed to a conflict that had been simmering. Earlier that day, deputies had interacted with two other men in connection with an ongoing argument involving McIntyre. These same two men, Dain Robert McCann and Jacob Sloan, soon became the primary suspects in his killing. Investigators believe that McCann, who was 24 at the time, was the one who fired the weapon that killed McIntyre. They further alleged that 27-year-old Sloan aided in the commission of the crime by driving McCann to and from the scene of the shooting.
Within a short time, both suspects were apprehended. Dain McCann faced a charge of second-degree murder, alleging he intentionally took McIntyre's life. He was also charged with obstruction of justice. Jacob Sloan was booked on charges of accessory after the fact to second-degree murder and obstruction of justice for his alleged role in the incident and its aftermath.
By the end of November 2022, a St. Tammany Parish grand jury found sufficient evidence to move forward with a trial. The grand jury returned an indictment against Dain Robert McCann for the second-degree murder of Jon Paul McIntyre and for obstruction of justice. In the same case, Jacob Sloan was indicted for obstruction of justice and for being an accessory after the fact to second-degree murder, solidifying the legal battle that would follow the untimely and violent end to a young man's life.
