In the quiet Abita Nursery neighborhood, located between Covington and Abita Springs, Louisiana, the life of 25-year-old Kawon Moore was cut short on May 2, 2022. On that spring afternoon, deputies from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's office responded to reports of gunshots in the vicinity of Pansy and Progress streets. Upon their arrival, they discovered Moore inside a vehicle, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Remembered by his family as a man with a deep love for animals, Kawon had once spoken of becoming a veterinarian. His mother, Qwana Moore, recalled his immense compassion, stating that she could go to sleep with one dog in her yard and wake up to find four, a testament to his caring nature. To his younger sisters, he was a father figure who, despite his imperfect attempts at styling their hair, was a loving and protective presence in their lives. The sudden and violent nature of his death left his family in a state of shock and profound grief, turning the days leading up to Mother's Day into a period of mourning.
The investigation into Kawon Moore's death continued for several months. In December 2022, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office announced a significant development in the case. An arrest warrant was issued for 27-year-old Tyrus Brock of Kentwood. Brock was already incarcerated in the Tangipahoa Parish jail on unrelated charges when he was served with the warrant for Moore's murder. He is now facing a charge of second-degree murder. While an arrest has been made, authorities have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing, and further arrests are possible.
