Desk Sergeant Timothy S. O'Connell, a 31-year-old male of Irish descent, was a dedicated member of the Chicago Police Department. On the night of April 29, 1900, while off duty and in plain clothes, he was walking to his car after visiting friends and relatives of his wife. As he approached the 18th Street Viaduct, he was confronted by an armed robber named George Henchik.
