Patrolman George H. Allen, aged 36, was a dedicated officer of the Galesburg Police Department in Illinois. On the evening of August 14, 1902, Allen was shot and killed while pursuing two suspects through an alley. During the chase, Allen knocked down a saloonkeeper, who then retrieved his gun from inside the saloon and shot Allen. The suspect Allen was chasing was shot twice in the shoulder by return gunfire and subsequently arrested by other officers.
