Police Officer James H. Watkins, a male member of the Cairo Police Department in Illinois, tragically lost his life on December 20, 1903. Officer Watkins was shot and killed while performing his duties. He had been with the department for only eight months at the time of his death.

The incident occurred after Officer Watkins arrested a man wanted for robbery in Mounds, Illinois. Watkins recognized the suspect and apprehended him at the intersection of 21st Street and Poplar Street. While ...
