Detective Sergeant William J. Russell, a 34-year-old white male, was tragically killed on June 12, 1909, in Chicago, Illinois. He was a dedicated officer with the Chicago Police Department, having served for over 12 years. On the night of his death, Sergeant Russell and his partner, Patrolman Thomas Stapleton, were on patrol when they encountered George Kellar, a known criminal also known by the aliases "Bob" La Blanche and "The Gimlet Burglar." Bertsche’s saloon, located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue (modern-day Wells Street) and Randolph Street, suspecting he was carrying concealed weapons.
As the officers approached Kellar, they engaged him in conversation and eventually asked to see if he was armed. Without warning, Kellar produced two pistols and opened fire on the officers. Sergeant Russell was struck twice and killed instantly. Patrolman Stapleton, despite being wounded, managed to return fire, critically injuring Kellar. The suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended by other officers who responded to the gunfire.
Kellar was initially convicted of Sergeant Russell's murder and sentenced to life in prison. However, he was later granted a new trial and subsequently acquitted. Despite his acquittal, Kellar's criminal activities did not cease. In 1916, he was sentenced to 40 months in Leavenworth for robbing the Chicago federal building of $500,000 in stamps. Upon his release in 1920, he was quickly apprehended again for robbing a Chicago drug store.
Sergeant Russell's death was a significant loss to the Chicago Police Department and his family. He was survived by his wife, Anna Lillian, his father, two brothers, and a sister. His dedication and service are remembered and honored by his colleagues and the community he served.
