Detective Sergeant William J. Russell, a 34-year-old white male, was tragically killed on June 12, 1909, in Chicago, Illinois. He was a dedicated officer with the Chicago Police Department, having served for over 12 years. On the night of his death, Sergeant Russell and his partner, Patrolman Thomas Stapleton, were on patrol when they encountered George Kellar, a known criminal also known by the aliases "Bob" La Blanche and "The Gimlet Burglar."
