Deputy Sheriff Wesley G. Davis, aged 53, was shot and killed on July 4, 1910, in Mound City, Illinois. Davis, an African American peace officer, was attempting to arrest two men who were causing a disturbance. The suspects, also African American, were celebrating the Jack Johnson prizefight that had taken place earlier that day. During the altercation, Davis was fatally shot.
