Patrolman Patrick Fogarty, aged 41 years, was a dedicated officer of the Chicago Police Department's 10th Precinct – Hyde Park. On the night of July 1, 1911, Fogarty was off-duty and spending time with his nephew, Michael Hannon. They had enjoyed a night out at a picture show and visited several saloons with friends. Fogarty returned to his nephew's boarding house to ensure he got home safely.
