Guadalupe Maldonado, a 46-year-old Mexican immigrant, was one of seven victims of the tragic Brown's Chicken Massacre in Palatine, Illinois, on January 8, 1993. Maldonado, along with the restaurant's owners Richard and Lynn Ehlenfeldt, and five other employees, was brutally murdered during an armed robbery. The assailants, Juan Luna and James Degorski, entered the restaurant around closing time and forced the employees into the walk-in freezers before shooting them.
The case remained
unsolved for nearly nine years until a breakthrough came in 2002 when a former girlfriend of Degorski's implicated the two men. DNA evidence played a crucial role in linking Luna to the crime scene, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction in 2007. Degorski was also found guilty in 2009 and both were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
The Brown's Chicken Massacre is remembered as one of the most notorious crimes in the Chicago area, not only for the brutality of the murders but also for the lengthy investigation that eventually brought the perpetrators to justice.
