John C. Knight, a 38-year-old white male, was a dedicated police officer with the Chicago Police Department. On January 9, 1999, while on duty, Officer Knight and his partner, Patrolman James E. Butler, were investigating a suspicious vehicle in the Morgan Park District of Chicago. The vehicle, a brown 1986 Chevy Caprice, was suspected to be stolen due to its popped trunk lock.
