Sergeant Gregory Martin Sears, aged 50, was a dedicated officer with the Hampshire Police Department in Illinois. On June 1, 2000, while on routine patrol in an industrial area near U.S. Route 20 and Interstate 90, he was shot and killed. A witness heard several shots and found his body approximately 20 feet from his cruiser. Despite wearing a bullet-resistant vest, Sergeant Sears did not survive the attack.
