Detective William "Wally" Rolniak Jr., a 39-year-old white male, was tragically killed on February 4, 2004, in Riverdale, Illinois. Rolniak, who had served with the Riverdale Police Department for 14 years, was taken hostage and shot execution-style by a suspect inside the police station. The suspect, who had been in custody on charges of attempted murder, home invasion, and aggravated kidnapping, managed to grab Rolniak's service weapon during a transfer from an interview room to the lockup area. Despite being cooperative and not handcuffed, the suspect seized the opportunity to overpower Rolniak, forcing him out of the station and shooting him in the head behind a building across the street.
The suspect, who had a history of violence and had previously abducted his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint, attempted to flee the scene by carjacking multiple vehicles. During this escape attempt, he shot and wounded an elderly man who resisted. The pursuit ended when the suspect aimed his weapon at pursuing officers, who then shot and killed him. Detective Rolniak was transported to Christ Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries two hours later.
In the aftermath of Rolniak's death, the Riverdale community and law enforcement agencies mourned the loss of a dedicated officer. Rolniak, a United States Air Force veteran, was remembered for his commitment to public service and his role as a beloved husband and father. He left behind his wife, two teenage daughters, parents, and three sisters. In honor of his service and sacrifice, the Detective William (Wally) Rolniak Jr. Public Safety Building was dedicated on March 4, 2005.
