In the summer of 2011, a burst of violence on a Dorchester street cut short the life of Joseph Winston, a 26-year-old African-American man from Boston. On the fifth of July, Winston was on Columbia Road when gunfire erupted, leaving him fatally wounded. Another individual, Lashon Washington, was also killed in the same incident, their deaths marking another chapter in a year that saw a troubling increase in homicides across the city.
