Deon Freeman, a 26-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on March 21, 2012, in the South Side Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred at approximately 10:08 a.m. when Freeman was exiting a convenience store located at 1607 W. 72nd St. He was accompanied by an older man who had just bought him a pop. As Freeman walked out of the store, he was approached from behind by Jamony Nunley, a 21-year-old known member of the Gangster Disciples street gang.
Nunley fired a .40 caliber semi-automatic gun, striking Freeman in the chest and head. Freeman was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn at 11 a.m.
The investigation into Freeman's death revealed that Nunley was captured on a police camera at the scene of the shooting. After the incident, Nunley was seen entering and exiting an abandoned home in the 1500 block of West 72nd Street. Inside the abandoned home, police recovered a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol with Nunley's fingerprints. Shell casings found at the scene of the shooting matched the gun recovered from the abandoned home. Nunley was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
During the Cook County bond court hearing, prosecutors presented evidence linking Nunley to the crime, including video footage and forensic evidence. Nunley was held in lieu of $2 million bail. The court documents also highlighted Nunley's affiliation with the Gangster Disciples, a notorious street gang in Chicago. The case against Nunley proceeded through the legal system, with his next court appearance scheduled for May 13, 2013.
