On the night of April 13, 2014, Joshua was involved in a dispute with a fellow gang member, 17-year-old Angel Jara, over money that Jara allegedly owed him. The argument escalated, leading to a physical altercation. Despite attempts by others at the scene to break up the fight, the situation took a deadly turn when Jara lured Joshua to his home under the pretense of retrieving the owed money.
Once at Jara's residence, Joshua waited on the front porch while Jara went inside. Moments later, Jara opened the door slightly and fired five shots at Joshua with a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun equipped with a laser scope. Joshua was struck in the back of the head, lower back, left side, and left shoulder, causing him to fall from the porch. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Following the shooting, Jara was taken into custody by the police, who recovered the weapon used in the crime from his home. The witness who had accompanied Joshua and Jara to the residence identified Jara as the shooter. Jara was subsequently charged as an adult with one count of first-degree murder and was held without bond.
