Lisheka Haggard, a 34-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on July 4, 2019, in Chicago, IL. The incident occurred in the Garfield Park neighborhood, where Lisheka was drinking with a male acquaintance. During their interaction, a struggle ensued over a weapon, leading to Lisheka being fatally shot. The exact circumstances surrounding the struggle remain unclear, but it was reported that Lisheka was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Following the shooting,
Lisheka's brother, Marcus Williford, was charged with involuntary manslaughter. Marcus, who was 26 years old at the time, had a valid license to carry a concealed firearm. He found Lisheka holding his gun shortly before 1:30 a.m. at their mother's home on West Wilcox Avenue. According to Cook County prosecutors, Marcus attempted to wrestle the gun away from his intoxicated sister, resulting in the weapon discharging and striking Lisheka in her left cheek below her eye. The siblings' mother was awoken by the gunshot and found Marcus standing next to Lisheka, pleading for her to get up.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Marcus had reported the gun stolen two years earlier. When police arrived at the scene, he initially claimed he did not know where the gun was. Despite the tragic nature of the incident, there was no evidence of a dispute between the siblings. Marcus's defense attorney argued that the shooting was an accident, and Marcus was subsequently held on $20,000 bail. He was scheduled to appear in court on July 22, 2019.
