Jimero Starling, a 19-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on July 3, 2014, in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL. The incident occurred early in the morning as Starling and his friends were riding their bicycles west on Division Street after leaving a party. They were approached by a group of individuals who identified themselves as members of the Latin Kings gang.
Despite Starling's attempts to explain that he was also a member of the Latin Kings, the group continued to harass him and his friends.
The confrontation escalated when one of the gang members, Randy "Garfield" Ruiz, 18, pointed a gun at Starling and his friends while shouting gang slogans. As the situation intensified, Ruiz and another gang member, Jeremy Medina, 20, chased Starling and his friends. Medina and another individual caught up with Starling and began to assault him. Ruiz then ran up to Starling and shot him in the head, resulting in his immediate death. The entire incident was captured on surveillance cameras, and witnesses were able to identify both Ruiz and Medina.
Following the shooting, both suspects were apprehended and charged with first-degree murder. Randy Ruiz was held without bail, while Jeremy Medina was held in lieu of $750,000 bail. Medina also faced additional charges of aggravated battery in a public place. The case was brought before Cook County prosecutors, who detailed the events leading up to Starling's death and the involvement of the suspects.
