Kaylyn Whitaker, a 20-year-old white female, was found dead from a gunshot wound on October 31, 2014, in Martinsville, Illinois. Initially, her death was ruled a suicide based on the scene where her boyfriend, Connor Scott, claimed she had shot herself. However, forensic experts later doubted this conclusion due to the location of the bullet wound. Ten months after her death, the case was reclassified as a homicide. Despite this, no immediate arrests were made, and Connor Scott, who was present at the scene, was not initially charged.
As time passed, Kaylyn's family grew increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress in the investigation. In December 2018, Kaylyn's father publicly expressed his anger over the case's stagnation. In February 2019, Connor Scott unexpectedly confessed to the murder at a police station in Danville, Indiana. Following his confession, he was charged with Kaylyn's murder and extradited to Illinois. Despite initially pleading not guilty, Connor later accepted a plea deal in October 2019, resulting in a 37-year prison sentence. Kaylyn's family, though hoping for a longer sentence, found some closure with the resolution of the case.
