Demond Avant, a 16-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life to gun violence on December 3, 2014, in Chicago, Illinois. Demond was standing on the sidewalk in the 600-block of North Mayfield Avenue in the Austin neighborhood when a gunman emerged from a van and opened fire. The incident occurred just before 9:30 p.m., and witnesses reported hearing a rapid volley of shots.
