Rajesh Madala, a 35-year-old Indian American male, was tragically killed on April 6, 2015, during a robbery at the Auto Gas Station in Bay View Gardens, Illinois. Madala, who was working as an attendant at the gas station, was shot and killed by the suspect during the robbery. The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Robert McGrane, was quickly identified by the authorities thanks to an overwhelming public response to the release of surveillance footage from the gas station.
Within 24 hours of the incident, officers obtained an arrest warrant for McGrane and located him in a remote area of Woodford County. During a confrontation with the police, McGrane attempted to enter an abandoned house and a brief exchange of gunfire ensued. McGrane ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The Woodford County Sheriff's Office confirmed that McGrane had no other gunshot wounds or injuries, and the autopsy performed later showed that he had fired just one shot.
The investigation into the robbery and fatal shooting revealed that Madala had complied with the suspect's demands and handed over money when threatened with a gun. Despite his compliance, he was still shot and killed by McGrane. The authorities are still investigating the robbery and have not determined the exact amount of cash taken or the motive behind the crime. Madala's family, who were returning to India, were deeply affected by the tragic loss.
