Jeremy Salinas, a 17-year-old boy from Chicago, IL, was tragically murdered on June 10, 2015, in a drive-by shooting in the Bridgeport neighborhood. Jeremy, who was of Hispanic descent, was targeted by members of the Satan Disciples street gang. The incident occurred after members of the gang stole his bicycle and taunted him and his friends with pictures of it on social media. On the day of the shooting, Jeremy was attempting to retrieve his stolen bicycle when he was gunned down.
Witnesses reported that Jeremy was standing with other members of the Latin Kings gang when a car driven by Omar Hernandez, a 23-year-old member of the Satan Disciples, approached and shots were fired. Jeremy was struck in the left arm, with the bullet exiting through the right side of his abdomen, causing him to collapse and die at the scene.
The investigation into Jeremy's death revealed that the shooting was premeditated. Members of the Satan Disciples had agreed to shoot at any Latin King they encountered that day. Surveillance footage captured Hernandez and other gang members getting into the car used in the drive-by shooting an hour before the murder. Witnesses were able to provide police with a description of the vehicle and a partial license plate number, which led to Hernandez's arrest. He was later found in the same car used during the shooting and admitted his involvement in the crime. Hernandez was charged and held on a $1 million bail.
