Amari Brown, a 7-year-old African American boy, was tragically killed on July 4, 2015, in Chicago, IL. Amari was struck in the chest during a drive-by shooting around midnight while watching fireworks in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The incident occurred in the 1100 block of North Harding, where Amari was an unintended victim of a gang-related conflict.
His father, Antonio Brown, who was a known gang member, was believed to be the intended target of the shooting.
The investigation into Amari's death led to the arrest and subsequent conviction of two men, Rasheed Martin and Jamal Joiner. Rasheed Martin, 28, was convicted of two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, one count of aggravated battery, and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm. Jamal Joiner, 29, faced three counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, one count of aggravated battery, and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm. Both men were found guilty by separate Cook County juries in March 2024.
During the trials, it was revealed that the shooting stemmed from a longstanding gang conflict in the neighborhood. Prosecutors argued that both Martin and Joiner armed themselves with 9-mm handguns and opened fire with the intention of killing someone that night. The evidence presented included six shell casings recovered at the scene, five from one gun and a single casing from a second gun. Despite the defense's argument that Martin only fired a single shot in the air, the jury found both men responsible for Amari's death.
The trials were presided over by Judge Nicholas Kantas, with different juries for each defendant. The juries deliberated for several hours before returning guilty verdicts for both men. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of gang violence and the innocent lives lost in such conflicts.
