Abel Ruvalcaba, a 21-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on July 13, 2015, in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 4:30 a.m., in the Little Village neighborhood. Abel was sitting in the front passenger seat of a car, accompanied by friends, when the vehicle approached the intersection of 24th and Sawyer. At this moment, a 16-year-old boy named Andrew Zamora approached the car.
Abel, through his open window, asked Zamora where he was from. Without any provocation, Zamora immediately raised his arm and fired a Glock 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, hitting Abel twice in the right shoulder. The driver of the car rushed Abel to Mount Sinai Hospital, flagging down police officers on the way. Despite their efforts, Abel succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The investigation into Abel Ruvalcaba's death led to the swift arrest of Andrew Zamora. Officers who heard the gunshots saw Zamora running from the scene and were able to apprehend him after a brief chase. During the pursuit, Zamora discarded his shirt and the gun used in the shooting, which was later recovered by the police. Zamora was identified by a backseat passenger of the car Abel was in, and four 9 mm shell casings were collected from the scene. In court, Zamora denied any gang affiliation, although he allegedly told police that he knew he was shooting at "Kings," a reference to a local gang.
