Tracey Morgan, a 25-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on October 13, 2015, in Chicago, Illinois. Morgan was a reputed member of the Bang Bang Gang/Terror Dome faction of the Black P Stones. On the night of his death, he attended a "gang call-in" meeting organized by the Chicago Police Department and other law enforcement officials at the Friendly Temple Church of God in Christ.
These meetings aim to steer gang members away from a life of violence by offering them resources and support.
After the meeting, Morgan's mother picked him up, and they were driving home when they noticed a silver sedan following them. As they reached the 8200 block of South Lafayette Avenue, the sedan passed their car, cut in front of them, and stopped. Another vehicle stopped behind them, boxing them in. Two gunmen, including Khalil Yameen, a reputed member of the Killa Ward faction of the Gangster Disciples, approached their car and opened fire. Morgan was shot at least 11 times, while his mother was wounded in the arm.
Morgan was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 9:27 p.m. His mother was treated for her injuries and survived the attack. The shooting was part of a series of retaliatory acts between rival gangs, culminating in the killing of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee on November 2, 2015.
Khalil Yameen was charged with Morgan's murder and held without bail. The investigation revealed that Yameen and another shooter had attended the same gang call-in meeting as Morgan. Cellphone tower records and other evidence placed Yameen at the scene of the crime. The murder of Tracey Morgan and the subsequent killing of Tyshawn Lee highlighted the ongoing gang violence in Chicago and the challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing such violence.
