On October 25, 2015, 39-year-old Tyrone D. Smith, an African American male, was fatally shot in the parking lot of MB National Bank, located across from the N’Zuri Nightclub in Dolton, Illinois. The incident occurred in the early morning hours following a minor fender-bender in the parking lot, which escalated into a confrontation among several individuals. Witnesses reported a commotion involving multiple people, some of whom had braided or dreadlocked hairstyles. Tyrone D. Smith was pronounced dead at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Hammond, Indiana, at 3:17 a.m. ,
Following an investigation, authorities identified 24-year-old Tyrone Smith, also an African American male, as the primary suspect in the shooting. Despite sharing the same name, the suspect and the victim were not related. An arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued on October 30, 2015. The FBI offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the suspect's arrest, describing him as armed and dangerous.
On October 5, 2017, the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force apprehended the suspect, Tyrone Smith, in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and stood trial in February 2020. The prosecution's case relied heavily on witness testimonies and surveillance footage from the bank's security cameras. Notably, during the trial, a key witness identified the suspect as the gunman for the first time, leading to questions about the reliability of eyewitness identification. On February 14, 2020, Tyrone Smith was convicted of first-degree murder. However, while awaiting sentencing, his legal team filed a motion for a new trial, citing violations of discovery rules and concerns over the credibility of witness identifications.
