Jacques Barnes, a 20-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on November 22, 2015, in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, IL. The incident occurred when Barnes was sitting in his car. According to reports, Antonio Doss, 31, and Kwan Ward, 20, both African American males, were involved in the shooting. Doss was driving a van and pulled over near Barnes' car. Ward exited the van, approached Barnes, and shot him approximately 11 times.
Barnes sustained gunshot wounds to the back of his head and left knee. He was transported to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 5:28 p.m.
The motive behind the shooting was linked to gang rivalry. Ward admitted to shooting Barnes because they belonged to rival gangs that were feuding. He had seen Barnes taunting them earlier. After the shooting, Ward attempted to flee but was struck by a vehicle. He managed to get back into Doss' van, and they sped away from the scene. A witness who saw the shooting followed the van and alerted the police. Doss and Ward were eventually apprehended after a brief chase. Ward directed the police to the firearm he had used, which he had discarded under a porch. Eleven casings were found at the scene.
Both Doss and Ward were charged with first-degree murder and held on a $1 million bond. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gang violence in Chicago and the tragic loss of young lives due to such conflicts. The investigation and subsequent arrests underscored the efforts of law enforcement to address and mitigate gang-related violence in the city.
