Santiago Garcia-Mendoza, a 40-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically killed on January 14, 2016, in Bridgeview, Illinois. The incident occurred in the driveway of his home, located in the 7400 block of Beloit Avenue. Witnesses reported seeing a dispute between Santiago Garcia-Mendoza and another man, Sergio Ramirez-Abeja, a 43-year-old Hispanic male. The altercation escalated, and Ramirez-Abeja shot Garcia-Mendoza multiple times while he was on the ground.
Garcia-Mendoza was found unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds when officers arrived at the scene.
Following the shooting, Ramirez-Abeja fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV. A utility crew working nearby provided police with a detailed description of the getaway vehicle, including the license plate number. This information enabled law enforcement to quickly locate and pursue Ramirez-Abeja. The chase began on Harlem Avenue and continued onto the Tri-State Tollway and Interstate 57, reaching speeds of up to 85 mph. Multiple police agencies, including the Illinois State Police, joined the pursuit.
The high-speed chase ended near Peotone, Illinois, when Ramirez-Abeja made a U-turn in the median reserved for authorized vehicles. A Bridgeview police officer attempted to stop him by performing a tactical maneuver, causing Ramirez-Abeja's SUV to crash into the median. As officers approached the vehicle, they heard a single gunshot. Ramirez-Abeja had committed suicide with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was found to have a valid concealed carry permit for his 9 mm Beretta.
The motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear. However, it was revealed that Ramirez-Abeja was the biological father of a woman who was present in the house at the time of the incident. Garcia-Mendoza was her stepfather. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the subsequent chase involved multiple law enforcement agencies.
