On the evening of her death, Aaren was sitting in her car outside her apartment in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood, talking to her father on the phone, when she was struck by a stray bullet in the back of her
head. The bullet was fired during a gang-related altercation nearby, and Aaren was an unintended victim caught in the crossfire.
The incident occurred around 6:40 p.m., but there was a delay in the arrival of police and paramedics, who did not reach the scene until 7:30 p.m. Aaren's roommate found her unresponsive in the car and called for help. She was rushed to John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County in critical condition but succumbed to her injuries two days later. Her father, David O'Connor, was on the phone with her at the time of the shooting and later recounted the heartbreaking last words she spoke, expressing that her head hurt.
The Chicago Police Department launched an investigation into Aaren's death, focusing on the gang activity in the area. They reviewed private video footage and footage from a CTA bus in an attempt to identify the shooter. Despite these efforts, no arrests have been made, and the case remains unsolved.
