Dawson Stephan, a 16-year-old boy from Melrose Park, IL, tragically lost his life on June 3, 2016, after being shot while sitting on the porch of his home. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. when a white minivan drove up to the house and fired multiple shots into the backyard where Dawson and two other individuals were seated. Dawson suffered a single gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood later that night.
The Melrose Park Police Chief, Sam Pitassi, stated that the motive for the shooting was gang-related, emphasizing that the house was not randomly targeted. However, Dawson's mother, Michelle Stephan, refuted these claims, asserting that her children were not involved in gangs. She mentioned that their family had been harassed by local gangs for years, with their home being shot at multiple times. Dawson, the youngest of nine children, had attended Proviso West High School before dropping out and was planning a career in the military. He and his brothers worked together as newspaper delivery drivers to support their family.
Despite the police's assertion of gang involvement, no arrests or suspects have been publicly identified in connection with Dawson Stephan's death. The investigation into the shooting has not led to any significant breakthroughs, and the case remains unresolved. Dawson's family continues to grapple with the loss, maintaining that he was not involved in any gang activities and was simply a victim of the ongoing violence in their neighborhood.
