Ericka Cox-Bailey, a 30-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on June 12, 2016, in Champaign, Illinois. She was shot in the neck while walking home from a store near the intersection of North McKinley Avenue and Francis Drive. The incident occurred around 8 PM, and she succumbed to her injuries three days later on June 15, 2016. The shooting was a result of gunfire from a passing vehicle, which was part of a gang-related altercation. Unfortunately, Ericka was an unintended victim of this violence.
Following her death, the Champaign Police Department launched an extensive investigation. Three young men were arrested and charged in connection with the shooting. Shamario Brown, 18, from Champaign, Illinois, was identified as the individual whose bullet struck Ericka. He, along with Takario Greene, 18, from Macon, Georgia, and Oshae Cotton, 19, from Champaign, Illinois, were charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. The suspects were apprehended in different locations, with Brown being arrested in St. Louis, Missouri, and Greene and Cotton in Georgia.
The legal proceedings saw significant developments. Oshae Cotton's murder charge was eventually dropped, and he pleaded guilty to a weapons offense. He was sentenced to 30 months of probation and 180 days in jail, with credit for time served. The other suspects, Brown and Greene, faced charges of first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, with bond set at $1 million each.
Ericka's family expressed a mix of emotions, including forgiveness towards the young men responsible for her death. They hoped that the suspects would learn from their mistakes and make better decisions in the future. The case highlighted the devastating impact of gang violence and the importance of community efforts to prevent such tragedies.
